Week #9 Results
Jan 8, 2011, 4:17 pm

Here's the Week 9 results...

The Stickmen were home at the Down Lo hosting the Dragons. The match was tied 6-6 at the break. John Chamberlin chipped in a 3-winner to keep it close. Sundy and Keith beat John and Steve for the Beer Frame win. In the second half, Aaron started it off with a 3-win effort, but Leo and Keith finished the night with 6 straight wins, and a final score of 12-9.

It was a battle of the Lounges upstairs as I took on II. Tony got all 3 of his for the Lounge I, and Rusty got all 3 of his for the Lounge II, leaving the teams tied at the break. Fahd and Jason Jones got the bragging rights this time as they beat Steve Swim and Captain Ed for the Beer Frame. In the bottom half, the players traded 2-1 games, and Ed got the last one 2-1 for the close 11-10 victory.

The Bulldogs were home at the Oasis taking on the Hammerheads of Last Call. The 'Dogs were up 7-5 at the mid-point, but they turned up the heat in the bottom frames winning 8 of 9 making the final score 15-6 Bulldogs. Sean and Rich got the Beer Frame though, beating John Denton and Ed Bowers.

Also at the Down Lo, the Playa's were hosting the Original O's. The Playa's were up 8-4 at the Beer Frame, thanks to Charles' 3-0 showing. Charles and Kevin won the Beer Frame against Joel and Josh. After Tom LeClaire played his match and got 1 point, Captain Mike looked at his bench and realized it was empty, and had to forfeit the final 2 matches. The free 6 points gave the O's a 12-9 victory on the road, handing the Playa's their first loss of the season.

The Empire Club flew in from Durham Thursday for their match at the Oasis versus the Nuggets. The teams were tied at the break 6-6. Jimmy Scott got 3 for the 'Nugs, and Ian Filby got 3 for the Empire to help their respective teams. James and Paul won the Beer Frame for the Empire as they took care of Bill R. and Matt ?. of the Nuggets. In the bottom half, Patrick, Julius, and Ty each got 2 wins to give their Empire a 12-9 victory.

Good luck in week #9. The Playa's will be on their bye week, but my hunch is they will not be resting. I'm sure you'll still see the crew playing downstairs all week.

Week #8 Results
Jan 8, 2011, 4:02 pm

Sorry for the delay - I took the Holiday break off from pool business, but here finally is a quick recap of week #8-

The Playa's beat the Bulldogs 15-6, as Henry and Jason each got 3 wins for the Playa's. Charles and Kevin also got the Beer Frame win. The Playa win gave them a huge 40-point lead in the standings.

The Down Lo Stickmen lost a close one to the Original O's of Oasis, 10-11. It was tied 6-6 at the break, thanks to Stickman Larry's 3-win frame. Leland and Stacy got the Beer Frame win after James won all 3 of his in the first half. Joel got 2 out of 3 in the final match to seal the deal.

The Nuggets also lost a close one 10-11 to the 8-Ballers. Bud won his match 3-0 for the Ballers, and everyone else had 2-1 or 1-2 matches. Matt and Mike Brandt Jr. got the Beer Frame for the Nuggets.

The Dragons beat up on the Towne Lounge I club, as they walked away with a 13-8 victory. Jeff Brun and Micah won 3-0 matches back-to-back, and Brenon and Micah won the Beer Frame.

The Towne Lounge II team traveled to Durham and snuck out with an 11-10 victory. Ed Theis and Shawn Bell had hat tricks for the Lounge, and James Williams got all 3 of his for the Empire. Steve Hale and Rusty beat Pat and Julius for the Beer Frame honors.

Week #9 results on the way...

Results from Week #7
Dec 14, 2010, 10:21 pm

Here are the results from week #7 (12/9/10):

Over at the Oasis, Stacy's Original O's were 'home' versus the Oasis Nuggets. In a close first-half, Mike Brandt, Sr. got 3 wins to start the night off for the Nuggets, but two matches later, Josh Vasquez got three for the O. When they went to the Beer Frame, the Nuggz were up 7-5. In the aforementioned Beer Frame, Scotch doubles partners Lee and Mike Karol beat the O's Troy and Leland for the honors. Leland struck back in the 5th match, starting the comeback, getting all 3 games. Slade got two, and Joel got two, wrapping the night up for a come-from-behind 12-9 victory.

On the North side of town, the Strip Mall Shooters - more commonly known as the Last Call Hammerheads - were hosting the Down Lo Stickmen. The first half was all Stickmen - as they were up 9-3 at the break. Shooting in the second spot, Larry Hiller pulled out the hat trick to help his team on it's way. Larry came back to the table for the Beer Frame as he and Scott took on Hammerhead Beer Frame legends Sean and Rich. The Stickmen got the wins, but Sean and Rich Jr. had an impressive 8-Ball Run Out, Scotch doubles style, in the second game. Scott stayed at the table and got 2 wins, and Keith popped up to get all 3 of his, kilt and all, giving the Stickmen a huge 14-4 lead with one match still to go. Saving his team from a disastrous defeat, Kris Rhode came up big and won all 3 of his to finish the night, leaving the Stickmen with a semi-ass-whooping 14-7 victory.

The Empire Club was back at home in Durham as the visiting Dragons made the trek south. It didn't take long for the Dragons to heat up as Brenon shot first and got all 3 of his games. Kenny Smith made a rare start and got two of his games, Jeff Brun got a rare 1 point victory, and Micah got two points to give the Dragons an 8-4 lead at halftime. Pat and James shot down John Chamberlin and Brenon's hopes of free beer, as they efficiently won the Frame 2-0. Luckily the Dragons had a good start. One of their other players must have gotten lost in the orchards along the Midway as they had to fare with only 6 players. Fortunate for them, 6 was enough tonight as they still won 11-10 despite forfeiting the last match.

The Towne Lounge II club has to still be reeling from the freight train that hit them last week - aka the Playa's Express. The first place Down Lo team travelled upstairs to take on the Lounge on their table - a table which according to rumors they took with them when they left. Henry Dorsey, Kevin Cibart, Gregg Prendergast, Brian Griffin, and Charles Lintz all had 3-0 victories. Throw in Mikey's 2 points and Jason's 1 point, and you have an 18-3 clobbering. Have to give props to Mark Sweany who managed 1 win, and Captain Ed who stood strong for his team and got 2 wins. That was it for the Lounge. The Playa's must have felt bad winning by the Beer Frame, as Charles and Kevin gave it up to Ed and Shawn.

The other Towne Lounge team was over at the Oasis where they fared much better against the 8-Ballers. Here's an S.A.T. math question for you: If everyone for the 8-Ballers got one point, except Jimmy Soto who got two, and everyone on the Towne Lounge team got two points, except for Dave Larabee who got one, what was the final score?

A. 8-Ballers 10, Lounge 11

B. 8-Ballers 11, Lounge 10

C. 8-Ballers 7, Lounge 14

D. 8-Ballers 8, Lounge 13

E. None of the above

The 8-Ballers couldn't win the home Beer Frame match, as Rob and Brian lost to Kevin and Fahd, with a score of - you guessed it - 2-1. Oh yeah, the answer is D.

That's all there was from week #7. The Bulldogs will be back in action coming off their bye week. The Hammerheads of Last Call will have much more time to practice their karaoke as they have the bye week next. Everyone's off the two weeks after as we break for Christmas and New Year's. Be sure to ask Santa for a new cue before it's too late!

Good luck in week #8 - the last week for Chico Men's Pool in 2010!

Website tip/workaround for stats page
Dec 9, 2010, 3:13 am

I know there are some limitations/bugs/annoyances with the website, namely in the stats page. One of them is the lack of a percentage column. Trust me, I wish there was one, but the site doesn't have it built in. The developers are getting hounded by me to make one. Hopefully there will be one soon.

The other annoyance is that when you want to see the true leader in match wins (or any category), it doesn't include everybody. You can select the column you want to sort from highest to lowest, or lowest to highest, but it only shows the top 99 on page one, then on page 2 it shows players 100-112. Page one won't show the bottom of the alphabet players (on page 2). So, for example, James Williams won't be on page one for match wins, but he's the top of the column in page 2. I did, however, stumble on a workaround. If you are interested, here it is. To show all 112+ players on one page, so you can see the true leaders (or losers), do this:

Go to statistics page (green left-hand column)

Click on Team Filter (it says by default 'all players', but it really isn't (see above))

Choose a team (any team)

Once it loads that team's stats, go back to Team Filter and re-choose 'All Teams'

All the players will be on one page and you can sort it however you like by clicking once or twice on the column heading (MW, RunOut, 2-win, etc.) and see the true league leaders (or losers).

Hope that helps - the developers know about that bug and they say they will fix it in the next update, whenever that is. Again, the site was developed for soccer, hockey, softball, etc., leagues. We had to modify it a little to make it work for billiards. Even then, our league structure and playing-style isn't a 'conventional' one, which doesn't make it any easier. I'll report any updates or changes when they happen.

Week #6 Results
Dec 9, 2010, 2:58 am

Alright, Thanksgiving week is over - time for some pool!

Here are the results from week 6 (12/2/10):

The Nuggets were at home at the Oasis taking on the #1 team, the Down Lo Playa's, but the Playa's were the ones who felt at home. They manhandled the Nugs 15-6. Only two 3-game winners this week for the Down Lo squad - Kevin Cibart (current Top Shooter) and Captain Mikey got 'em all. Gregg "only" got 2 wins, but did one of them in an 8-Ball break-and-run fashion. The Playa's did give one thing up - the Beer Frame, as Kevin and Jason lost to Mike B and K. The Playa's run at a perfect Beer Frame season is over. (Everyone dry your eyes - it's OK).

In a neighboring little village called Durham, the Empire was hosting the Last Call Hammer Heads. The match was tied at the break as teams traded 3-point shooters (James Williams for the Empire, and Sean Wasson for Last Call), and 2-point shooters (Eric Monlux and Josh Burdette). The Sean-and-Rich Jr. Beer Frame machine came through for the Sharks, as they defeated Julius and Ian. Schooners for everyone! The second half was tight, too, as teams traded 2 point winners, Sam and Ty. It came down to the last match, last game, as Lloyd came through and got it from Troy, giving the Hammerheads a close 11-10 win.

At another crowded Thursday night at the Oasis, the Dragons were 'home' versus the Oasis Original O's. Mike Clarke of the Oasis O's got a hat trick in the first half, as did Steve Hambek for the Dragons. With a 7-5 lead at the half, the O's went ahead and got the beer frame, as Troy and James beat newcomer Nate and veteran Micah 2-0. In the bottom half, Joel Russo sealed the deal with a 3-pointer himself, leaving the O's on top with a 13-8 final score.

Towne Lounge I was at home downtown hosting the Bulldogs of Oasis. The teams traded 2-point wins through the first four matches, the Bulldogs on top 7-5 at the break. Newbie Tyler and Fahd won the Lounge's first beer frame of the year, as Ed Bowers and Frank couldn't get the "3" of the best of 3. Frank did come back to the table in the 6th spot and win all 3 of his games, sealing the deal for the 'Dogs, as they won 12-9 on the road.

The nomadic 8-Ballers of Oasis (for now) were 'home' versus the Towne Lounge II crew. Things didn't go too hot for the 'Ballers as the Lounge came out swinging. The Deuce went up 8-4 at the half (thanks to Shawn Bell's 3-point effort), won the beer frame (Ed and Prana beat Doug and Jimmy N.), wrapped up the second half efficiently (Lounge II Captain Ed got all 3) making the final score 14-7, Lounge.

The Down Lo Stickmen had the bye last week. Rumor is they played 13 hours a day, everyday, blindfolded, at an undisclosed location, getting prepared for the rest of the season. Lookout Hammerheads. The Bulldogs have the bye this week - leaving plenty of time for them to shine and buff their 2009-2010 trophy's.

Good luck in lucky week #7!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Nov 24, 2010, 8:49 pm

Week #5 Results:

First off, hope you're enjoying your Thanksgiving break!

Here's the results from week five-

The Down Lo Playa's were home downstairs hosting the Dragons of Oasis. The Playa's came out shooting, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead at the break. This time Charles and Gregg were the 3-goal getta's, helping to build the lead. The duo of Charles and Russ got the beer frame from Nate and Brenon, 2-0. The Playa's weren't finished, they decided to throw a few more points on the scoresheets, with Russ adding the final insult with a 3-0 victory to wrap it up. The Dragons hobbled out of the Down Lo with a 16-5 loss.

The Last Call Hammerheads were hosting Stacy and the boys of Oasis on Thursday. The O's went up big in the first half - up 10-2 at the Beer Frame - with help from back-to-back 3-0 hat tricks from Josh Burdette and Leland Baxter. Josh and James couldn't get the Beer Frame for the home team, as Rich Jr. and Shawn won it for Last Call. That's where the Hammer Heads turned things around. After the beer frame, the Sharks won 6 of the final 9, Rich Jr. got 3 of those himself, to leave the final score a respectable 13-8 Oasis win. Not bad, considering how it started.

Continuing the lopsided victories, we head down to the Oasis where the 8-Ballers were going up against the defending champs, the Bulldogs. Like I said, it was one ended - but not how you may think. The Traveling 8-Ballers came in and put the smack down on the 'Dogs - 14-7! Rob started off the night with a 3-0 win, but then Keith W. came back and won 3 for the Bulldogs. Jimmy Nguyen got 2, and Brian V. finished off the first half with a 3-0 tally. Up 8-4 at the break, the tandem of Pops and Mike couldn't get the beer frame from Frank and Steve of the Bulldogs. The teams traded 2 point victories, and in the final match Doug stepped to the table and faced... no one. The 'Dogs were short a player and Doug got 3 for his team just by sitting on a bar stool.

At the Towne Lounge, the original TL team was hosting the Stickmen of Down Lo. It was another blowout, as the Lounge was up 9-3 at the break. The Stickmen didn't get a point until the third match, as Tony T. got all 3 of his, and Kevin smoked his opponent 3-0. The Men with Sticks got the beer frame, thanks to Leo and Cele's strong, quick, and efficient disposal of Howard and Edward. Dave Larabee came out and won all 3 of his, and Leo and Sundy finished off the night with 2-pointers to leave the final score at a dismal 14-7 laugher.

The other Lounge team, Towne Lounge 2, was over at the Oasis taking on Oasis 5 - the Nuggets. In another uneven match, the Nuggets finished the night on top 13-8. Mike Brandt Jr., Mike Karol, and Izzy all got three victories in their respective matches. On the other side of the score sheet, Rusty and Ed were the lone gold star sticker recipients for the Lounge II as they each got 3-0 wins, as they combined for 6 of their team's 8 total points. Not much of a surprise, but the Ed and Rusty show were the selections for the beer frame, as they made quick work of Lee and Bill, winning 2-0.

No games this week obviously - enjoy your Thanksgiving! Towne Lounge player Kevin Kinell will be celebrating his first as a Dad, as he and his wife had their first child, Liam, on October 27th. Congratulations Kevin!

The Stickmen will be going back to the drawing board, practicing, and trying to find a way to turn things around. They'll have plenty of time as they will be the bye team for December 2nd. Everyone else - good luck!

Week #4 Results
Nov 16, 2010, 2:50 pm

Hey Everyone - here's the results for Week #4 in the Chico Mens Pool League:

The Nuggets were home at the Oasis with a full bar of pool players, taking on the Towne Lounge I team. The Nuggets got out to a good start with each of their first 4 players getting 2 out of 3 games, giving them an 8-4 lead at the break. Bill and Lee defeated Dave and Edward in the Beer Frame, giving the Nuggets some free beer. In the second half of the night, Mike Brandt, Sr. got all 3 of his games, and Izzy chipped in 2 of his own, giving the Nuggets a 13-8 victory. I just recently got word of an altercation that broke out near the end of the match which I am still investigating. More information to follow.

The Down Lo Stickmen made the journey South to Durham to take on the Empire. James of the Empire won all 3 of his to start the night off, including a break and run victory. But Wheezal Dogg, aka Brent, struck back with a 3-spot of his own. Later in the first half, Scott also spotted a 3-win match to help the Stickmen's cause. Kris and Leo beat the Empire's Pat and Paul for Beer Frame honors, earning many free schooners for the players. The Stickmen were up 7-5 at this point, but Ian and Ty made things close, and it came down to Leo having to get 2 out of 3 to win the night. He did one better, getting all 3 of his games, giving the Stickmen a 12-9 victory on the road.

Back at the Oasis, the O's were taking on the Bulldogs, which turned out to be a great match. The teams were tied at the break 6-6, thanks to Josh Burdette's 3-win match for the Original O's. The Bulldogs won the Beer Frame - Ed and newcomer Ray beat James and Troy. Stacy was in a lose-lose situation anyways, having to buy the round either way. The second half was close, but thanks to Slade's hat trick, Joel needed to get just one in the final frame, which he did, for the O victory, 11-10.

The Towne Lounge II team was home, hosting the Hammer Heads of Last Call. The match was close in the first half, as Rich Sr. of the Hammer Heads and Rusty Piazza of the Lounge each got 3-win victories, leaving the Last Callers up 7-5. Sean and Rich Jr. couldn't get the Beer Frame from Prana and Ed, as they won 2-0. Prana stayed at the table to play in the 5th match and got all 3 games, but Sean Wasson got 2 big points, and Rich Jr. got the final match 3-0, giving the Last Call Hammer Heads a 12-9 win on the road.

The final match of the week happened at the Oasis, as the team formally known as the Nicks 8-Ballers were 'home' against the Down Lo Playa's. As mentioned, the Oasis was full as 6 teams were playing there last week. The Playa's were not hindered by the lack of elbow room, as they spanked the 'Ballers 16-5. The usual big players came up big - Kevin Cibart got all 3 of his, including one via an 8 ball break and run, and teammate Jason Colabove got a hat trick as well. Those wins keep those two tied atop the top shooter list at an impressive 11 out of 12 games won. Everyone else on the Down Lo team got 2 wins, to give them the big win, to keep them in first place. Jason and Russ also won the beer frame from Rob and Brian. No news yet on where the 8-Ballers are going to call 'home'. I'll let everyone know ASAP.

This week the Durham players get to stay home and do whatever Durham players do in Durham when they are not playing pool - they have a bye this week. Everyone has a bye next week as we break for Thanksgiving. Good luck in week #5!
