Season Starters...
Oct 10, 2014, 12:38 pm

Schedule:

The 2014-2015 CMPL schedule has been printed and will be posted at the Oasis, and the rough draft will be taken down. You can download/print it in .PDF form by clicking on 'Downloads' in the green left-hand column. It has been entered online as well (click on 'Game Schedule' in the green, left-hand column). The schedule is and was a bitch to put together. Straight up sucked. But the one I made a few years ago was good - it was balanced (homes vs. aways, no long home or away streaks, no over-crowded bars, etc.). So I used the same one a few times over. But now it's over-used - teams would have the same bye weeks, same rotation of opponents, etc. So this year it has been mixed up and randomized, and tweaked some more. Hopefully I didn't go too far and mess it up. I entered it late last night, match by match, so I'm hoping it's all been inputted correctly. It's a butt-load of small details and lots of data. I still need to proof it, but it should be good. Give me 72 hours before you start making vacation plans around it. If someone else out there doesn't mind comparing the two for me and check for errors, I would appreciate it. Just let me know if it's good or what's wrong. EDIT: There was one error that was fixed - I gave the wrong week off for the Reno Bar Table Championship tournament. Now the games for February 19th (the week of the tourney) were moved to February 26th (previously omitted).

Captains Meeting:

Okay, the captains meeting was completed without incident. Here's some of the results:

NEW: Mid-year Chico Memorial Pool Tournament - At Down Lo, sometime around mid-season, a tournament open to all (women, men, non-league members, etc.). Small $5 buy in, race to 2 and race to 1, probably 8-ball. It will also be a remembrance for those pool players we have lost along the way. A 50/50 raffle will also be included. Most of the income will go to the tournament prize money awards, some will go back to the CMPL fund. Plus an 8-ball break contest: enter the contest at the beginning with $5 in this 'side bet' and at anytime during the tournament you make the 8-ball on the break you win the pot (first to do so, that is).

* All 13 teams returning from last year - no new teams or bars

* Awards banquet and pool party for 2015 - at the Oasis

* Top Shooter Tournament - at the Oasis. Now officially named 'The Charles Lintz Top Shooter Tournament' in honor of Charles and his 20+ years of excellence in the CMPL. The top 8 players will be playing for the inaugural 'Chucky' trophy.

* To be eligible in the playoffs you must now compete in 6 nights of the season, either as a match player of 3 games or a beer frame shooter, or any combination there of.

* Same format as last year - "A Trophy" for top 8 seeded teams, "Best of the Rest trophy" for teams seeded 9-13. Team seeded 9th would have a bye, teams 10-13 would battle first.

* Is the season too long? We have some ideas to shorten it, but we need to first get a consensus on what the player thinks. Do we need to address this in some way or not? Let your captain know in the next few weeks, and next year we will take measures to do so. One of those measures would include using this years standings, so we need input ASAP to know if we are moving forward and time to start thinking about your position at the end of this year for next year.

Your captain will fill in the rest THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16th at your FIRST MATCH OF THE 2014-2015 CMPL SEASON! Unless you're the Empire Club - you've got the first bye week. Bring your money for your captain for your league dues if you haven't already done so - $20 per player.

Good luck this season - I'm excited, hopefully you are too! Thanks for letting me be president of this great league/club/family/society one more time.

POOL TIME!
Sep 30, 2014, 12:04 am
Welcome to the 2014-2015 CMPL Season!

Okay, time to get Kevin's ugly mug off the top of the news feed...

‚ÄčIt's POOL TIME again! But just to be clear, not that kinda pool - Thursday Night CMPL Pool starts in just a few weeks! It looks like the season will start on October 16th, maybe October 9th if we can get our shit together.

The captains meeting will take place THIS THURSDAY, Oct. 2nd, at the Oasis, at 7:00pm. Just like last year, only one captain OR delegate from each team may attend. Handling 13 suggestions and complaints is a lot better than 26. So voice your concerns to your captain (or delegate) and have them heard this Thursday at 7:00pm. Or, maybe your complaint IS your captain, lol. If so, you can always email me here: chicomenspoolleague@gmail.com, or 966-5632, and I'll address it. Don't forget, there is a 'forum' section on the website for general discussion and suggestions. I check it regularly for input. You might have to be registered through the CMPL website to post, but it's free and painless.

The player fee was raised from $17 to $20 last season, so I really don't see a reason to raise it more this year. It's a nice, round number. But if anything changes at the captains meeting I'll let you know. Compared to other leagues, it's an absolute steal - $20 bucks total (no weekly green fees) = weekly practice time, 3 matches and maybe a beer frame, a free beer each week, time with your friends, and a kick-ass party at the end of the year. Nice. It used to be $5 total just like 10 years ago! "Back in my day,..."

By the way the pool party and awards banquet, which is on a yearly rotation, will be at the Oasis this year. Perfect timing, too - Stacy and Jackie have got the place looking immaculate. New paint, new chairs, new carpet. And of course the most critical - the 'new' tables - completely re-done from the feet up - and frickin' amazing. Glen was on a mission to make sure the Oasis had the best tables in town. And he has succeeded, hands down. Stacy got a great deal and made the obviously perfect choice. Glen has got the tables rolling at a nice pace, perfectly level, the pockets are the right size - not too big, but not ridiculously small, the rails are the right height and consistency. You all know my skill level, or lack of, and I (coincidentally or not) made like 5 banks in a row (non-successively, just through a few matches) with Cele last week. Watch out for the Oasis Bankers this year! Stacy has even removed the smaller bar table upfront and replaced it with an official 7 foot Diamond bar table - the exact one (maybe literally) used in Reno and Vegas for the Championships. Perfect for those getting ready for Reno in February.

Be sure to pay your captain on time. The CMPL website has been reset for the new season. All team members and stats have been zeroed out and removed (except for team captains). Once I receive payment from you, you will be moved from my inactive player list onto your team. If your name shows up on your team, that means your payment has been received. If you are not listed under your team, I have not received anything and it's time to talk to your captain and/or me. Inactive players will be penalized by points and 'pool party donations'.

Want to welcome Meredith as the new Chico Womens Pool League president! It feels like a dictatorship in the CMPL - our presidential tenures are forever compared to the CWPL. I'm sure Meredith will do great things - be sure to support her and the women whenever possible.

So that's that. Captains, again - Thursday October 2nd (3 days from now) at the Oasis. Everyone else, keep your calendars clear on Thursdays from October 16th (or 9th) on.

Kevin Cibart - Down Lo Playa's

2013-2014 Chico Mens Pool League Top Shooter

Congratulations to Kevin Cibart - this year's Top Shooter! He battled through a tough line-up of shooters at the Oasis last week to claim the top prize. He started off against Steve Smith, then had to face Brian Norman, then on to eventual 2nd place shooter, Mike Karol. He had to beat Mike in a race to 5, and it was close at the halfway point. The turning point could have been when Kevin was up 3-1 (maybe 2-1) and Mike took the table with about 4 or 5 balls left. He ran all those out and had a straight forward shot on the 8 ball, but it rattled in the pocket drawing a huge gasp of "OOH's" from the busy Oasis crowd. Kevin went on to win 5-2 from that point and took home the $100 winner-take-all prize. Once again, good job Kevin.

POOL PARTY AND AWARDS BANQUET THIS SATURDAY, 1:00PM at THE EAGLES!

I've been talking about it for weeks - see prior posts for all the details, but here's the bottom-line:

The Eagles will be getting 2 extra tables in addition to their normal table, so we'll have air-conditioned tournaments all afternoon. FREE BEER! The CWPL will be providing 2 kegs of beer this year. They will also be providing the side dishes to compliment the tri-tip we will be serving. Awards and trophies will be given out, including the inaugural 'B-Trophy'. PLUS - the always fun RAFFLE! There are two ways to help out the CMPL - either donate a raffle prize, or buy lots of tickets. I've been shopping and have some great prizes to give away, but I need more! Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised on the quality and quantity of the items this year.

If you can't make it Saturday at 1:00pm, we'll see you in October!

-Scott-

The End is NEAR!
Jun 11, 2014, 6:20 pm

Sorry - been too busy to post anything!

In case you haven't heard, congratulations to the 2013-2014 CMPL Team Champions - The Oasis Outlaws! In a great match at the Down Lo, the Outlaws came out victorious 11-7 (I think).

That makes Playa's second place - great job! And the winner of the 3rd/4th place match was the Oasis Bulldogs - way to go.

For the B-Trophy, it was the Down Lo Damned coming out victorious for the inaugural win. Congratulations!

All trophies will be handed out at the pool party on Saturday, June 21st at the Eagles (see below).

The Top Shooter tournament is TOMORROW NIGHT (Thursday, June 12th) at the Oasis, starting at 7:00pm! Here is the lineup and tables:

7:00pm - #4 Seed Dennis Bruch vs. #5 Seed Brian Norman - Table #1 (race to 3)

7:00pm - #3 Seed James Williams vs. # 6 Seed Keith Whitworth - Table #2 (race to 3)

7:00pm - #2 Seed Leland Baxter vs. #7 Seed Steve Smith/Mike Karol - Table #3 (race to 3)

8:00pm (or so) - #1 Seed Kevin Cibart vs. #8 Seed Steve Smith/Mike Karol - 1st Avail. Table (race to 3)

8:00pm (or so) - Winner of James/Keith plays winner of Leland/Steve/Mike - 1st Avail. Table (race to 3)

9:00pm (or so) - Winner of Dennis/Brian plays winner of Kevin/Steve/Mike - 1st Avail. Table (race to 3)

10:00pm (or so) - Championship Match - Table #4 (Race to 5)

Pool Party! - Saturday, June 21st - 1:00pm - Eagles

You paid for it, now it's time to enjoy it! The annual pool party will be at the Eagles this time where they have rented and installed two additional tables (so 3 all together) to play on. We will still have that great tri tip sliced and ready to go. The CWPL players will be paying for TWO kegs of free beer and providing the side dishes.

Trophies and awards will be presented.

PLUS - possibly the biggest raffle we've had in a long time, if ever. I've got some great prizes, but I'm always looking for more. If you can help out and provide one, anything new and cool, I would really appreciate it. This is where we make the money to help out the CMPL, so the more the better. Can't donate? Then buy a bunch of raffle tickets! Either way you're helping OUR league!

More details to come - just mark you calendar now - Saturday, June 21st at the Eagles starting at 1:00pm.

Championships!
Jun 3, 2014, 12:35 am

I still need to get some score sheets, but I do know the results of a few games...

The Damned Loungers beat the Tackle Box at the Down Lo. The Eagles beat the Last Call at the Eagles house. So now the Damned will face off against the Eagles for the first ever B-Trophy! (We need to find a better name for these trophies...) It will take place at the Down Lo on Thursday night, 7:00pm, table #5.

Fortunately enough, for spectators and fans alike, the A-Trophy championship will be ocurring at the same bar at the same time. The Down Lo Playa's will be taking on the Oasis Outlaws on table #10, 7:00pm.

I still haven't made it down to the Oasis to get the score sheet from the 3rd/4th place game between the O-Team and the Bulldogs, and nobody has said anything to me, so I don't know as of yet who won. Once I find out, I will post the results.

Hopefully we'll see you downtown at the Down Lo this Thursday - should be some great matches!

Playoff Results
May 26, 2014, 11:34 am

Here's what happened in last week's A-Trophy playoffs:

The Down Lo narrowly got by the Oasis O-Team in an exciting match that went down to the wire - actually down to the 21st game, a semi-rarity in the playoffs. Kevin won all 3 of his games to get the Playa's out to a lead, but Joel offset that with 3 of his own. Dave of the Playa's was clutch, many considering it the biggest match of the night, as he beat Brian V. in a close 2-1 frame. It ultimately came down to Leo vs. 'Little' Jimmy. The teams were tied 9-9 going into the final match. Jimmy got the first one to go up 10-9, but Leo did what Leo does - held it together and got the final 2 points for a Playa's 11-10 victory.

Over at the Oasis, the Outlaws were hosting the Bulldogs. Kenny got all 3 to help his team to an 11-7 win over the 'Dogs. Ricky, Greg, and Bulldog each had 2 wins to help the cause.

Now the Outlaws will head to the Down Lo on June 5th for the championship.

This Thursday, May 29th, will be the 3rd/4th place match between the O-Team and the Bulldogs. It will start at 7:00pm at the Oasis, on table #1. The #3 seeded Bulldogs will be the 'home' team.

Here's what happened in last week's B-Trophy playoffs:

I still need to swing by the Oasis and pick up the score sheet for all the details, but a reliable source tells me the Tackle Box beat the Bankers for the Wild Card 12th seed. So on this Thursday May 29th, the Damned will play the Tackle Box at the Down Lo, on table #10, at 7:00pm. The Eagles will host the Last Call Rack Pack, at the Eagles, Thursday May 29th at 7:00pm. The winners of each match will play each other the following week (June 5th) for the B Trophy Championship.

Playoffs - Round 1
May 18, 2014, 4:20 pm

Here's what happened in last week's round 1 playoffs (for the A Trophy):

The #1 seed Playa's were playing the #8 seed Stickmen at the Down Lo. All the games went 2-1 Playa's except for the final matchup where Leo needed to get just one, and did. Final score was 11-5 Playa's. Kevin and Leland settled the first place tie with a race to 3 game playoff - Kevin won 3-0 so he is the #1 seeded Top Shooter, Leland #2.

The #2 seed Outlaws were playing the #7 seed Dragons at the Oasis. Despite both teams playing at home, a score sheet was never dropped off in the box so I don't know officially what happened. Rumor has it the Outlaws won.

The #3 seed Bulldogs were taking on the #6 seed Duffy's Tavern at the Oasis. Keith got all 3 of his in the first half to help the Bulldogs on their way to an 11-6 win.

The #4 seed O-Team were home taking on the #5 seed Empire Club, also at the Oasis. This was the closest playoff game of the night as it should be (#4 vs #5). The Empire was up 7-5 at the break thanks to Casey's 3-0 win. But in the bottom half Mike Clarke came right back with 3 of his own. Troy got 2 more for the Empire to make it 9-9 going to the final matchup. Brian V. played last and got the final 2 putting the O-Team up 11-9 and giving them the close win.

I don't know if Mike Karol and Steve Smith played their Top Shooter #7/#8 seed playoff tie-breaker game. I'll post the results if they did. If not, they will both be at the Oasis this Thursday so maybe they can take care of it then.

So assuming the Outlaws won, here's the Main Playoffs / "A-Trophy" schedule for this Thursday, May 22nd:

#1 seed Playa's vs. #4 seed Oasis O-Team at the Down Lo, Table #10, 7:00pm.

#2 seed Outlaws vs. # 3 Bulldogs at the Oasis, Table #1, 7:00pm

The B-Trophy playoff schedule for May 22nd is:

#12 seed Bankers vs. #13 seed Tackle Box at the Oasis, Table #2, 7:00pm

The B-Trophy playoff schedule for May 29th is:

#9 seed Damned vs. winner of Tackle Box/Oasis at the Down Lo, Table #5, 7:00pm

#10 seed Eagles vs. #11 seed Last Call Rack Pack at the Eagles, Table #1, 7:00pm

I'll update the results once I get that other score sheet.

-Scott-

Pre-Playoff Notes
May 15, 2014, 2:38 am

Hopefully everyone's seen the past emails, or been online, and have passed word on to their teammates regarding the playoff situations and locations. If not, see the post below this one.

The only thing I didn't realize until today is that there is also a tie in the Top Shooters for 7th and 8th seed. We already have Kevin and Leland going against each other for the top spot, but we also have to have a playoff between Steve Smith and Mike Karol. They will both be at Oasis Thursday night so if they want to do their race to 3 playoff to see who plays Leland and who plays Kevin in the tournament, they can do so. I realize it will be a crazy bar as it is so if they want to wait and do it at another time or next week if it works out, that's fine. We got time.

And also - to avoid any confusion created last year, the home team will put up their first 4 players just like we've been doing all year at 7:00pm. The visitor will then put up their first 4 players. Just like all year, those first 4 players need to be visible in the bar by 7:05 or forfeits will occur. Refer to the rules if you are unclear.

Attached to an email I just sent out is the final print outs for the year. They will also be posted at the Oasis.

Everything on the web site is also up to date - Top Shooters, stats, beer frame results, and standings.

Good luck in the playoffs - I'll see most of you Thursday night. I'll post results of the playoffs ASAP.

Remember that the B Trophy Playoffs will not officially start until May 22nd (NEXT Thursday), so teams 9-13 will not play for at least one more week, 2 weeks if they are seeded 9-11.

Hope that all makes sense. Call me if any questions.
